Wind, Sun & Crowds: How to Plan Beach Photos Like a Pro
Beach photo sessions are timeless, natural, and full of movement, but they also come with a few unique challenges. Wind, strong sunlight, and busy shorelines can all impact your photos if they are not planned properly. Whether you are planning beach engagement photos, beach graduation photos, or a beach family session, a little preparation goes a long way.
Here is how to plan beautiful beach photos that feel effortless and relaxed!
Timing Matters for Beach Photos
Lighting is one of the most important elements in beach photography. Midday sun is often too harsh and can cause strong shadows, squinting, and bright highlights.
The best times for beach photos are early morning or the hour before sunset. Golden hour creates soft, flattering light and enhances natural skin tones while giving the ocean a warm glow. Early morning sessions are also ideal if you want an almost empty beach! The start time will be early but the photos are so worth it!
Planning for Wind During Beach Photo Sessions
Wind is always present at the beach, but when planned for intentionally, it can enhance your photos rather than take away from them. Loose hairstyles, soft waves, and low buns photograph best in breezy conditions, while flowy dresses and lightweight fabrics add beautiful movement and a natural feel.
I work with the wind by guiding you so your hair flows naturally with it instead of blowing into your face. When used intentionally, wind adds a romantic, candid look that is perfect for timeless beach photos!
How to Avoid Crowds at the Beach
Crowds are one of the biggest concerns for beach photo sessions, especially during the summer months. Choosing the right day and time can completely change both your experience and the final look of your photos.
There is one thing I would never do when planning a beach session and I highly recommend you avoid it too. That is scheduling a mid day session on a summer weekend. Not only is the lighting at that time is extremely harsh, the weekend beach crowds are so overwhelming. Between bright sun and packed shorelines, it becomes much harder to create relaxed, natural images.
If a client suggests a mid day session during the week, I always recommend adjusting the timing or choosing a different day whenever possible. This ensures a better overall experience and allows for softer light and cleaner backgrounds.
Weekday sessions are typically much quieter than weekends, and sunrise sessions often provide nearly empty beaches. An experienced beach photographer also knows which locations tend to be less crowded and how to frame photos to avoid distractions, helping your photos feel calm and timeless.
Want the whole beach to yourself? Opt for a sunrise session like the ones above for an empty (& still stunning) beach!!
Positioning you into the breeze gives your hair a natural, airy movement!
What to Wear for Beach Photos
Your outfit choice plays a major role in how your beach photos look and feel.
Neutral colors, soft blues, muted greens, and earth tones photograph beautifully against sand and water. Light fabrics and simple patterns keep the focus on you and the natural scenery. Coordinating outfits instead of matching exactly creates a cohesive and timeless look for couples and families.
Trust Your Photographer
A professional beach photographer understands how to work with changing light, wind, tides, and crowds. From guiding you on where to stand to helping with natural posing, their goal is to make your session feel easy and enjoyable from start to finish.
Your photographer can also help you choose low key beaches or specific spots that tend to be more quiet and less crowded than others. Knowing where to go and when to be there plays a huge role in creating relaxed, timeless images.
You do not need to worry about being photogenic or knowing how to pose. Trusting your photographer allows you to fully relax, which leads to genuine, natural photos that truly reflect you!
Final Thoughts on Planning Beach Photos
Beach photos are about embracing the environment rather than trying to control it! With thoughtful timing, the right wardrobe, and an experienced photographer, wind, sun, and crowds can all work in your favor :)
If you are planning beach photos and want natural, timeless images that feel effortless, a little preparation makes all the difference!
