What to Wear for Your Upcoming Family Photoshoot

So, you’re officially booked for your family photoshoot! Whether it’s your little family of two, a session with grandparents and extended family, or somewhere in between, and now comes the big question:

β€œWhat are we supposed to wear?!”

This is probably the #1 question I get from clients, and I completely understand why. Outfits play such a HUGE role in the overall feel of your photos. The colors, textures, and style choices all affect how your images look and feel in the end.

And while I truly believe there are no strict rules when it comes to family photo outfits!! You should absolutely wear what feels like you β€” I also know that advice like β€œjust wear whatever!” isn’t exactly helpful when you’re standing in front of your closet stressed out.

So here’s my best advice to help make choosing outfits easier, less overwhelming, and honestly kind of fun!

My Top 3 Outfit Tips for Family Photos

1. Avoid Large Logos & Graphics

Big logos, graphics, and writing on shirts tend to pull attention away from what actually matters most: your family and your connection with each other.

Simple, timeless pieces almost always photograph best.

2. Be Careful With Too Much Black or Navy

Dark colors can definitely look beautiful, but when everyone wears black or deep navy, photos can start to feel very heavy. Sometimes details get lost too, especially during sunset sessions.

Instead, try to wear softer neutrals, earthy tones, creams, denim, or muted colors to keep things feeling balanced and natural.

3. Coordinate β€” Don’t Match

You want your outfits to look like they belong together without looking identical.

Gone are the days of everyone wearing matching white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for a coordinated color palette with a mix of tones, textures, and pieces that complement each other naturally.

Think About Your Session Location

Your location honestly helps determine the vibe of your outfits more than people realize.

Beach Sessions

Soft neutrals, light blues, creams, and flowy fabrics photograph beautifully at the beach. Barefoot moments and relaxed outfits work perfectly here.

Field or Fall Sessions

Earthy colors like rust, olive green, tan, cream, and brown always work beautifully in grassy fields or fall settings.

In-Home Lifestyle Sessions

For in-home sessions, comfort matters most. Cozy textures, soft fabrics, bare feet, and relaxed outfits help create intimate, authentic photos.

Comfort Matters More Than You Think

Especially for kids.

If your child hates their outfit, feels itchy, too hot, or uncomfortable, there’s a very good chance everyone will know five minutes into the session.

Choose outfits that:

  • Allow movement

  • Feel comfortable sitting and walking in

  • Let you easily hold kids and cuddle

  • Don’t require constant adjusting

The best sessions happen when everyone can relax and focus on each other instead of their clothes.

Start With One Outfit First

My biggest recommendation: choose one outfit you absolutely love first β€” usually mom’s dress or outfit β€” and build everyone else’s looks around that.

Once you have one main outfit, pull coordinating colors from it to create the rest of the family palette.

This makes outfit planning SO much easier.

Neutrals Are Your Best Friend

Neutrals are honestly the secret to cohesive family photos.

Think:

  • Cream, Beige, Tan, Olive, Sage, Denim, White, Soft gray, Brown

Even if you want pops of color, neutrals help balance everything and keep your photos looking timeless.

Patterns & Textures Can Add So Much

You definitely do not need everyone in solid colors. Subtle patterns, knit textures, linen fabrics, flowy dresses, or layered pieces can add depth and make your photos feel more natural and visually interesting.

The key is balance:

  • One or two patterns max

  • Keep patterns subtle

  • Pull colors from the pattern into other outfits

Little Details Matter Too

A few quick things people often forget:

  • Empty bulky pockets

  • Remove hair ties from wrists

  • Neutral shoes usually photograph best

  • Make sure nails are clean/neat

  • Bring backup outfits for little kids if needed

And honestly? Don’t over-stress every tiny detail.

The Most Important Thing

At the end of the day, your family photos are not about perfectly styled outfits.

They’re about connection.

The laughter, movement, cuddles, chaos, and love are what truly matter most. The best photos happen when you feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely like yourselves.

So choose outfits that feel natural, coordinate well, and fit the vibe of your session β€” then let the moments happen naturally from there.
